Sunday 28th September - walks ***** – Oulton Broad, Covehithe and
Southwold – cloudy start then some sunshine.
Walk 1 – Oulton Broad.
My much loved Cannnondale mountain bike died awhile ago and I have been
looking to replace it with a full-on electric one but didn’t like the
£2500 + price tag so checked on Facebook market place on Saturday for a
ordinary 29” mountain bike and was pleasantely surprised to find a
Boardman Pro 29er in Lowestoft which is only an hour up the road so arraged
to pick it up on Sunday which gave us a chance to have a picnic somewhere
new:) With 11 the pick arranged pick-up time I packed a picnic and we left
Felixstowe at 9.30 for a trip up the A 12 to North Suffolk, not a great
road with loads of speed restrictions but it was quiet so we had goo trip
up, we put the address in Mags phone and easily found it and quickly picked
the bike up, it looks really good too and will put the electric wheel in it
from my old bike, it will be nice to be able to get out onn the bikes
again! Being just around the corner from Oulton Broad so we headed there,
getting a little lost we did manage to see the new Gull wing bridge before
making it to park at Nicholas Eveeritt Park for a walk round what is the
gateway to the Broads, despite being cloudy it was lovely. You got half an
hour free in the carpark which was just enough time, it is nice to be back
in this part of the world as haven’t been this way for years. We ambled
along the promenade with loads of people fishing to the Waveny and Oulton
Broad Sailing club where loads of dinghies were heading out to race
including several younsters in modern boats and some much old people in
lovely wooden yachts with large white sails, we sat and watch the start of
a couple of races before heading back, Mag picked up the van while I went
and took some pics of a large group of swan, top start to the day.
Walk 2 – Covehithe.
I have driven past the sign to Covehithe loads of times but in my 71 years
I have never been, it is famous for crumbling sandy cliff and dead trees on
the beach so decided to take our picnic there:) The lane to Covehithe is a
dead end and we had heard parking is limited but there is but there are
several places to park on the verge just before the church and parked
easily at 12.15 near a huge field of pigs including loads of piglets:) We
were not sure of the best route as we set off down the lane but found a
footpath on the right including a map which lead down to Covehithe beach,
you could then walk along the beach to Benacre Nature Reserve which
includes a large broad! It was a lovely path pas the pigs where we got a
top view of the playfull piglets, while the large mother pigs were enclosed
by an electric fence the piglets were free to roam pretty much everywhere
only returning for a noisy feed! We continued on the path for about a mile
before reaching the beach with Southwold pier 3 miles further down, they
were several people enjoying the day despite it still being cloudy
including people fishing. We set off up the beach along the sandy cliff and
quickly realised were were not going to make it to the area of dead trees
as the tide was coming in and had blocked our way so we had to return to
the village and start again. This time we continued down the lane to St
Andrews church which is a small thatched church surrounded by a much larger
ruin which must have been an impressive Abbey at ome point! A quick circuit
of the church before continuing down the lane but there were several signs
saying it was closed due to erosion, we found a sign right at the end where
the lane disappears at the cliff but by turning left you could walk along
the cliff top to the Nature Reserve at Benacre, the cliff here is quite
high and we avoided getting too close to the edge! It was so peacefull here
with just the odd group of walkers, we found a nice grassy spot for lunch
and watch the gulls sore along the cliffs! We then continued onto the end
of the cliff where you could access the beach and what a wonderful spot it
was too, dead trees in the sand, loads of birds on the water and just so
remote, it is a brilliant place and we will definatly go back! I walked out
into the broad on a sandy spit past a huge tree stump and carried on to the
end of the water to look around the corner to spot Kessingland in the
distance looking even better now the sun had made an apperance. We walked
back along the cliff top to the van and were getting knackered by this
point we set off stopping to watch the pigs and a murmuration of starlings,
just brilliant!
Walk 3 – Southwold pier.
It was only a short drive to Southwold so we drove there coming out right
by the pier, I took a pic of the famous beach huts and we were lucky to
find a parking spot and had a quick walk to the end of the pier with lots
of people enjoying a day by the seaside. I then drove back to the A 12
before Mag took over the driving, what a brilliant day but knackering day
we had walking over six miles too!
